Today’s News: Exchanges between the First Lady of the DRC and the Under-Secretary of the United Nations on conflict-related sexual violence
As part of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the First Lady of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, visited New York. During her stay, she met the United Nations Under-Secretary in charge of conflict-related sexual violence, Pramilla Patten, to discuss the situation and the actions envisaged by the National Fund for Reparation of Victims of Sexual Violence in the Environment. conflict, also known as FONAREV.
During this meeting, Lucien Lundula Lolatui, Director General of FONAREV, presented to Pramilla Patten the organization’s roadmap as well as the actions already undertaken. Among these actions are the commemoration of Genocost on August 2 and recent homelessness in several provinces of the DRC, including North Kivu, South Kivu, Kasai Central, Ituri and Kongo Central. This roaming allowed FONAREV to establish direct contact with victims and to meet personalities committed to the fight against sexual violence, such as Dr Denis Mukwege, Nobel Prize winner.
Pramilla Patten assured FONAREV of her support and stressed the importance of collaborating with experts who have worked on reparations issues in other countries, such as Iraq, Kosovo and Guinea. This collaboration will make it possible to exchange good practices and strengthen efforts to combat conflict-related sexual violence.
This meeting between the First Lady of the DRC and the Under-Secretary of the United Nations highlights the importance of international mobilization to fight against sexual violence in times of conflict. It demonstrates the desire of political actors and civil society to work together to put an end to these heinous crimes and support victims on their path to healing and reparation..
