Meeting between the First Lady of the DRC Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi and the United Nations Under-Secretary in charge of conflict-related sexual violence
On the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the First Lady of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, traveled to New York to meet the United Nations Under-Secretary in charge conflict-related sexual violence, Pramilla Patten. This meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between the DRC and the UN in the fight against sexual violence in times of conflict.
During this meeting, Lucien Lundula Lolatui, Director General of the National Fund for Reparation of Victims of Sexual Violence in Conflicts and Crimes Against the Peace and Security of Humanity (FONAREV), presented the roadmap to Pramilla Patten of the structure as well as the actions already undertaken. Among these actions, we can note the commemoration of Genocost which took place on August 2 and the recent homelessness in five provinces of the DRC, namely North and South Kivu, Kasai Central, Ituri and Kongo. Central. These visits allowed FONAREV to establish direct contact with the victims but also with personalities involved in the fight against sexual violence, such as Nobel Prize winner Denis Mukwege.
Pramilla Patten expressed her support and commitment to supporting FONAREV in its actions. She stressed the importance of finding collaboration bridges in order to share good practices. Experts from FONAREV and experts who worked on reparations in Iraq, Kosovo and Guinea will establish a collaborative framework to exchange their experiences and knowledge.
This meeting between the First Lady of the DRC and the United Nations Under-Secretary in charge of conflict-related sexual violence marks an important step in the fight against this scourge in the DRC. It helps strengthen international cooperation and work together to provide better protection and assistance to victims of sexual violence in times of conflict.
