The situation in Deir Ezzor remains tense despite the announcement of the recapture of the localities by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Indeed, the clashes turned into a daily guerrilla war, mainly led by members of the Al-Uqaidat tribe, who joined the ranks of Arab insurgents following the arrest of the head of the Deir Ezzor Military Council.
These attacks, often carried out at night, target FDS bases as well as their patrols. It is a war of harassment, with almost daily attacks which pose a permanent threat to the Kurdish forces. Arab insurgents seek to drive the SDF from Deir Ezzor and demand the withdrawal of Kurdish cadres from the province.
The videos and images of the fighting bear witness to the violence of the situation. Armed Arab fighters attack SDF convoys and checkpoints, using Kalashnikovs and rocket launchers. Clashes are also taking place around strategic infrastructure, such as the al-Omar oil well.
In response to these attacks, the FDS makes arrests on a regular basis. They are conducting search operations in residents’ homes, looking for former members who have defected to join the insurgent Arab tribes. These arrests contribute to intensifying tensions and resentment towards the FDS, accused for several years of committing abuses against local Arab populations.
It is important to note that the Deir Ezzor Military Council, made up of Arab fighters allied with the SDF, was dismantled following the fighting. This suggests the existing dissensions within the coalition forces, between Kurdish and Arab elements.
The situation in Deir Ezzor therefore remains fragile despite the recapture of the localities by the FDS. The incessant attacks by Arab insurgents demonstrate the resilience of these groups and the challenge faced by Kurdish forces in stabilizing the region. It remains to be seen how this situation will evolve in the coming weeks and what measures will be taken to restore peace and stability in Deir Ezzor. Stay tuned!
