The port of Matadi in the DRC: one of the ten most efficient container ports in Africa!

According to the Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) published by the World Bank and SPG Market Intel, the port of Matadi in the Democratic Republic of Congo ranks among the ten best performing container ports in Africa. A recognition which underlines the efficiency and competitiveness of this crucial port in the region.

The CPPI evaluates the performance of container ports by analyzing the time it takes to process ships from the moment they arrive to when they leave the dock, without taking into account their size or the flow of containers. This criterion makes it possible to measure the operational efficiency of ports and their capacity to effectively manage maritime traffic.

According to data provided by Target S.A.R.L, imports represent on average 85% of the overall flow in the port of Matadi, with an average of 1,708,827 tonnes between 2013 and 2022. This trend is expected to continue in 2023, with an estimate of 1 404,642.25 tonnes of imports. On the other hand, exports represent only 15% of the overall flow, with an average of 306,210.75 tonnes over the same period, and a projection of 270,342 tonnes in 2023.

The port of Matadi accommodates different types of vessels, with a predominance of bulk carriers (36%), refrigerated containers (26%), general cargo (24%) and container ships (4%). This diversity testifies to the variety of goods processed in this port.

The CPPI index allows the World Bank to identify gaps in port infrastructure and make recommendations to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of ports. This approach aims to benefit all players in global trade: States, shipping companies, port operators, logistics companies, etc.

The ranking of the port of Matadi among the ten most efficient container ports in Africa confirms the importance of this infrastructure in the economic development of the region. With constant improvements in its performance, the port of Matadi is positioning itself as a key player in maritime trade in Africa and contributes to strengthening international trade.
