The assassination of Cherubin Okende: an investigation which arouses concern and impatience

Since July 13, 2023, the assassination of Cherubin Okende, former Minister of Transport in the Democratic Republic of Congo, remains an unresolved case. The famous politician’s family recently expressed concern over the slow pace of the investigation and the lack of transparency surrounding the autopsy results.

Lawyers for the Okende family recently contacted the public prosecutor at the High Court to obtain clarification on the progress of the investigation. They question in particular the lack of communication concerning the results of the autopsy, which was carried out almost two months ago.

In their correspondence, the group of lawyers wonders if the Prosecutor’s Office really has the desire to clarify this tragedy or if it is trying to deliberately delay the investigations. Is this slowness and silence strategic, aiming to stifle a delicate issue?

The Okende family also expresses their concern about the prolongation of their mourning due to this interminable wait. She fears that the Prosecutor’s Office will not be able to resolve this tragic case and is now considering seeking justice before international authorities.

Recall that Cherubin Okende was found dead in his jeep on Avenue Produits Lourds in Kinshasa, after being kidnapped by armed men. Despite the establishment of a commission of inquiry, the results are still awaited. At the same time, the driver, the bodyguard and the journalist Stanis Bujakera were arrested, the latter being prosecuted for an article published in Jeune Afrique, although he was not the author of this article.

This case arouses great emotion in the Democratic Republic of Congo and highlights the challenges that the country’s judicial system must face. Citizens are demanding justice and transparency, hoping that light will be shed on this shocking assassination.

In a context where the electoral deadlines are approaching, it is crucial that the competent authorities take the necessary measures to resolve this matter as quickly as possible. The search for truth and the fight against impunity must be at the heart of their commitment.

In conclusion, the assassination of Cherubin Okende remains an unsolved enigma which arouses the concern and impatience of his family as well as many Congolese citizens. It is essential that the competent authorities do everything possible to advance the investigation and do justice to the memory of this committed politician.
