Trial of Salomon Idi Kalonda: A legal battle against the accusation of treason and complicity with the M23 rebellion arouses interest in the DRC

Salomon Idi Kalonda, a Congolese politician, faced justice during his appearance before the Kinshasa-Gombe Military Court on September 18, 2023. This hearing followed the first one held a month ago, as part of the accusations against him, including treason and complicity with the M23 rebellion.

During this second hearing, Kalonda’s defense raised procedural arguments, questioning the legitimacy of the military court to judge their client. They argued that Salomon Idi Kalonda is a civilian and therefore this case should be tried in a civil court.

In addition, the defense expressed reservations about the regularity of the procedure, requesting the annulment of the minutes, on the grounds of detention considered unconstitutional and the absence of legal representation during the initial interrogations.

Despite his precarious state of health, Salomon Idi Kalonda insisted on being present during this hearing. Weakened and tired, his physical state bore witness to the ordeals he was going through. He declared: “As much as death can take me away through illness, as much as this situation that I am experiencing today with this trial of shame can take me away, that is why I demanded to be present “.

The next hearing is scheduled for next Monday, where the prosecution will respond to the arguments put forward by Kalonda’s defense.

This affair arouses keen interest in the DRC, Salomon Idi Kalonda being the right-hand man of political opponent Moïse Katumbi. His trial raises questions about freedom of expression and the rights of the political opposition in the country.

We remain attentive to the evolution of this matter and will keep you informed of future developments.
