“Victoria Nuland’s diplomatic visit to the DRC: American support for free and fair elections”
On August 2 and 3, Victoria Nuland, Acting American Under-Secretary of State, went to Kinshasa as part of a diplomatic visit. During this visit, she had the opportunity to consult the Congolese authorities and discuss the country’s political and security issues.
In a statement from the United States Embassy in the DRC, it was noted that Victoria Nuland clearly expressed American support for free and fair elections. She believes that elections held peacefully, on time, and with inclusive and transparent electoral processes, will contribute to strengthening the democratic consolidation of the DRC and will meet citizens’ expectations for a responsible and representative government.
The US Deputy Secretary of State also expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC as well as the brutal attacks against civilians. She stressed that the best solution to resolve this crisis is a diplomatic approach.
In a gesture of solidarity, Victoria Nuland announced an additional US$48 million in humanitarian aid to support those most vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. This brings the total amount of US humanitarian assistance to nearly US$486 million for the current fiscal year.
The US Embassy also welcomed the efforts of Congolese and international partners working in the east of the country to scale up humanitarian assistance and respond to urgent protection needs.
