Title: The mobilization of young Congolese against the decision of the CENI
Introduction :
The decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) to only organize the election of municipal councilors in provincial capitals in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has caused great discontent among Congolese youth. Grouped within the New Generation, a platform bringing together several youth associations, the latter have mobilized to denounce this measure which they consider to be a violation of their rights.
The refusal to restrict the election of municipal councilors to provincial capitals only:
The CENI’s decision to only organize the election of municipal councilors in provincial capitals sparked a strong reaction from the New Generation. According to the president of this structure, Totoro Mukenge, such a measure reduces the opportunity for many young Congolese to access the management of public affairs and contribute to the development of the country. Indeed, the majority of the Congolese population resides in villages and rural communities, it is therefore essential to allow these populations to be represented and to have their say in the management of public affairs.
The call for the mobilization of young Congolese:
La Nouvelle Génération encourages all young Congolese to oppose this violation of their rights and to demand the election of municipal councilors in all territorial entities. They underline the importance for Congolese youth to make themselves heard and actively participate in the management of power at all levels. Referring to the recommendations of the United Nations Security Council, expressed in resolution 2250 on the youth, peace and security agenda, the New Generation recalls the DRC’s commitment to the implementation of this agenda and the importance to give young people a voice in political decision-making.
Conclusion :
The decision of the CENI to restrict the election of municipal councilors to the provincial capitals in the DRC has sparked a strong mobilization of Congolese youth. Grouped within the New Generation, young Congolese denounce this measure as a violation of their rights and demand the possibility for all citizens, regardless of their place of residence, to participate in the management of public affairs. This mobilization underlines the desire of young Congolese to actively engage in building a better future for their country.
