Title: Reducing plastic pollution through the transformation of waste into ecological paving stones: the inspiring initiative of Kousséri, in Cameroon

The town of Kousséri, located in Logone-et-Chari, a region in northern Cameroon, has decided to take matters into its own hands. Faced with the absence of a garbage collection service and the proliferation of plastic waste, a collective of local NGOs has set up an innovative initiative: the collection and transformation of plastic waste into ecological paving stones. This innovative approach not only addresses the problem of plastic waste, but also contributes to the construction of sustainable and ecological roads.
The situation of plastic waste in Kousséri:
Kousséri, a town on the border with Chad and close to Nigeria, is facing a growing problem of plastic pollution. Plastic waste, largely from soft drink bottles and plastic packaging, accumulates in streets, floors and gutters. Not only is this waste unsightly, but it also poses a danger to local wildlife who may accidentally ingest it, resulting in their death. Faced with this worrying situation, local authorities saw the opportunity to implement a lasting solution.
The initiative to collect and transform plastic waste into ecological paving stones:
A collective of three local NGOs mobilized to fight against plastic pollution in Kousséri. The process begins with the collection of plastic waste, carried out by community members using scooters. This waste is then brought to a manufacturing unit specially dedicated to transforming plastics into ecological paving stones. On site, the waste is sorted, weighed and transformed into paving stones according to a precise process. Each paver is made from two kilograms of recycled plastic.
The advantages of ecological pavers:
Transforming plastic waste into ecological paving stones has many advantages. First of all, it helps reduce the amount of plastic waste present in the environment, thus contributing to the preservation of nature. This approach could also be shared with other regions or countries facing the same problem of plastic pollution.
