Results of Interpol’s Operation Jackal targeting financial crime in West Africa
The international criminal police organization (Interpol) recently carried out an investigative operation known as Jackal in West Africa. This operation, which aimed to combat financial crime in the region, was successful with the seizure of nearly 2.2 million US dollars.
According to an Interpol press release published on Tuesday August 8, 2023, Operation Jackal made it possible to identify more than 1,100 suspects involved in financial crimes. Participating countries in this operation include Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa, demonstrating the international cooperation needed to effectively combat financial crime.
Isaac Kehinde Oginni, Director of the Interpol Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Center (IFCACC), welcomed the success of Operation Jackal and highlighted the importance of international cooperation in the fight against financial crime. He said: “This successful operation involving such a large number of countries clearly shows what can be achieved through international cooperation, and will serve as a model for concerted police action against financial crime in the future.”
Operation Jackal focused on several types of financial crimes, including email scams, romance scams, inheritance scams, bank card fraud, tax fraud, payment fraud and money laundering. ‘money. These crimes have a significant impact on the region’s economy, reducing Africa’s GDP by 10% and causing a loss of US$4 billion since 2021.
