“General Salifou Mody courts support in Burkina Faso: a search for support in the region after ECOWAS sanctions”

General Salifou Mody, number two of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), continues to seek support in the region. After a visit to Mali, he went to Burkina Faso where he met the president of the transition, Ibrahim Traoré.

General Mody’s visit to Burkina Faso follows the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum in Niger and the sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against the CNSP.

In a recorded statement released to the media, General Mody welcomed Burkina Faso’s support in this context of sanctions and possible military intervention. He expressed his desire to prevent a situation similar to that in Libya and announced the implementation of activities in coordination with Burkina Faso to ensure the security of the populations of the two countries.

This visit by General Mody to Burkina Faso therefore testifies to the Nigerien putschists’ search for support from the military regimes in the region. This also raises questions about the position of certain ECOWAS countries vis-à-vis the sanctions imposed on Niger and the possibility of military intervention.

It is important to closely monitor developments in the situation in Niger and the region, particularly the reactions of neighboring countries and the international community. Political stability and population security are major issues that require particular attention.
