This Thursday, during the 43rd SADC Summit, President Félix Tshisekedi gave way to his Angolan counterpart João Lourenço, thus ending a year of presidency at the head of this regional organization. This transfer of power marked an important moment in the history of SADC and was an opportunity for President Tshisekedi to take stock of his mandate.

Félix Tshisekedi’s assessment:
In his review speech, President Tshisekedi paid tribute to the solidarity of SADC member states who deployed a mission in the DRC to fight against the M23 terrorist group. He highlighted the serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law caused by the resurgence of the M23, supported by Rwanda. Félix Tshisekedi also expressed his concern for the thousands of Congolese living in precarious conditions because of this unjust war.

The challenges ahead:
With the change of presidency at SADC, new challenges are looming on the horizon. João Lourenço will have the task of continuing efforts to combat terrorist groups and promote regional stability.
