The news in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been marked in recent days by the resurgence of the Moïse Katumbi case and growing concerns regarding the instrumentalization of justice and security services for political ends. The human rights organization, Justicia ASBL, expresses its concerns about this situation.
In a letter addressed to the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation, the former Special Advisor on security matters to President Félix Tshisekedi requests information on the alleged recruitment of “mercenaries” involving Moïse Katumbi. Justicia ASBL recalls that this case was closed in 2019 due to inappropriate prosecution. These demands raise fears about possible political interference in court cases.
The Justicia ASBL organization also denounces the situation of other political opponents in the DRC. Several personalities, such as Salomon Idi Kalonda, Franck Diongo, Mike Mukebayi, Daniel Safu and Matata Ponyo, are facing legal harassment. In addition, the assassination of Cherubin Okende, spokesperson for the Ensemble pour la République party, is singled out. For Justicia ASBL, this is an attempt to muzzle political opposition and dissenting voices.
Faced with these abuses, Justicia ASBL calls for the vigilance of the Congolese population and its partners, in order to counter any attempt to take or maintain power by undemocratic means. It also urges political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission and the institutions of the Republic to guarantee transparent and peaceful elections, respecting the will of the Congolese people.
It is essential to remain attentive to these issues and not allow a further deterioration of the democratic situation in the DRC. Peace and respect for human rights are essential foundations for the future of the country.
