The power of the pen: Release of a Congolese journalist, a victory for press freedom but vigilance remains
In a recent statement, the Rally of Journalists for the Emergence of Congo (RAJEC) joined numerous human rights organizations and journalists to demand the immediate release of Congolese journalist Stanis Bujakera, currently detained in conditions precarious.
RAJEC denounces the judicial harassment of which Stanis Bujakera is a victim, arrested in circumstances which contravene the laws in force. The perpetrators of this arrest are seeking at all costs to keep the journalist behind bars.
Placed in degrading conditions of detention, Stanis Bujakera is currently detained at the Gombe public prosecutor’s office, with the aim of transferring him to Makala prison. Press harassers continue to attack the journalist with the aim of pushing him to reveal his sources. After refusing to comply with their request, the authorities are now trying to mount new charges, going so far as to accuse him of falsifying documents. These maneuvers aim to worsen the situation in Bujakera and to criminalize the work of journalists.
For RAJEC, this case demonstrates the witch hunt of which journalists are victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is unacceptable that, in this historic period for the country, journalists and independent media continue to suffer harassment and marginalization, even leading to the closure of certain editorial offices.
RAJEC recalls that journalists have the right to protect their sources and that forcing them to reveal them constitutes an attack on press freedom. The movement therefore demands the immediate and unconditional release of Stanis Bujakera, who has not violated any ethical or legal rules.
In a call for solidarity, RAJEC announces that in the absence of Bujakera’s liberation, large-scale demonstrations will be organized in the next 72 hours.
This case highlights the challenges journalists face in their quest for truth and freedom of expression. Press freedom is an essential pillar of any democratic society and it is crucial that journalists can carry out their profession without intimidation or repression.
The release of Stanis Bujakera would be a symbolic victory for press freedom in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but it is essential to remain vigilant and continue to defend the rights of journalists. The international community and human rights organizations must support these efforts and work together to ensure an environment conducive to the exercise of independent journalism and the free flow of information.
It is time to recognize the power of the pen and stand up for journalists fighting for a free and impartial press around the world. The release of Stanis Bujakera would only be one step forward in this battle, but it serves as a reminder of the importance of continuing to fight for justice and freedom of expression.
