Plastic waste and other rubbish dumped into Lake Kivu have, for several days, been hampering the operation of the Ruzizi dam in South Kivu. This problem was deplored by the provincial director of SNEL (National Electricity Company) during a visit by journalists to the plant’s installations.
The director stressed that this situation forces SNEL to stop the operation of its machines on a daily basis in order to release this plastic waste. This unfortunately leads to power cuts, although electricity supply has become stable in the cities of Bukavu and Goma.
It is important to emphasize that this hydroelectric plant directly supplies the city of Bukavu in South Kivu, as well as part of the city of Goma, in North Kivu.
Faced with this problem, the provincial director of SNEL appealed to the population to stop throwing waste and rubbish into the gutters, because these end up ending up in Lake Kivu and obstructing the dam. . This situation inevitably leads to production stoppages and power cuts, which affect the daily lives of the population.
It is crucial to become aware of the impact of our actions on the environment and the need to preserve our natural resources. The protection of lakes and dams is essential to ensure a stable and sustainable electricity supply.
It is therefore imperative that everyone does their part by adopting responsible waste management practices. It is also essential to raise awareness among the population about the harmful consequences of pollution on ecosystems and on our own quality of life.
SNEL, for its part, is actively working to resolve this problem by implementing regular cleaning measures and strengthening controls to limit the deposit of waste in Lake Kivu.
In conclusion, it is time to realize the urgency of protecting our natural resources and acting responsibly in the management of our waste. The preservation of Lake Kivu and the Ruzizi dam is essential to ensure stable electricity production and provide energy to the population. Together, we can make a difference by adopting environmentally friendly behaviors.
