News: Former Kulunas in training to rebuild their country
A delegation of former Kulunas arrived in Johannesburg this Thursday, September 14. These young people, formerly known as Kulunas, are today called “builders”. They are part of the National Service of the Democratic Republic of Congo and were trained at Kaniama Kasese, where they worked in maize production for the country.
After this first training, some of them were selected to follow a 6-month training course in South Africa, in Pretoria. They will be trained to become machinists or technicians. This trip is supervised by the National Service, which is attached to the Presidency of the Republic.
These young people, who were once involved in delinquent activities, are grateful for a new chance to contribute to society. They express their gratitude and emotion as they leave for South Africa.
Major General Jean-Pierre Kasongo Kabwik, commander of the National Service, is confident about the results that these young people will be able to achieve.
“I have confidence in my builders, I know what they have become,” he declares.
The President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, recently provided the National Service with transport equipment, including rail means, to facilitate the evacuation of products from production centers.
This initiative was put in place by the Government in order to revitalize the National Service. Created in 1997 by former President Laurent Désiré Kabila, this service welcomes young graduates and unemployed volunteers to introduce them to various professions and patriotism. In September 2022, the National Service supplied the capital Kinshasa with three barges each transporting 500 tonnes of corn.
This new training in South Africa marks an important step in the journey of these young builders. Some of them may even become instructors and return to South Africa to train other teams. This initiative demonstrates the Congolese government’s desire to allow these young people to reintegrate into society and contribute to the development of the country..
