Coups in Africa: a persistent threat to democracy

Africa is facing a worrying increase in coups d’état in recent years. These shocking political events endanger stability and democracy on the continent. While the international community condemns these acts, some African leaders are asking themselves the question of their own responsibility in this situation.

President Umaro Sissoco Emballo of Guinea-Bissau recently spoke to highlight this reality and urge Africa to seriously reflect on this scourge. He recognizes the failure of sanctions and dissuasive measures in the face of coups and criticizes the inconsistency of African leaders in their management of these situations.

Indeed, many African leaders, once in power, reproduce the same faults that they criticized their predecessors. They use the country’s resources for the benefit of their own clan, persecute their political opponents and thus reinforce a climate of distrust and frustration among the population. These actions contribute to the weakening of democracy and also justify, in the eyes of some, coups d’état as a necessary recourse to eliminate corrupt leaders.

The question of loyalty to the people also arises. Leaders must be accountable to their fellow citizens and govern in the public interest. Unfortunately, in many African countries, the political elite sees power as a means of personal enrichment and forgets its responsibilities towards the people it is supposed to represent. This lack of loyalty and respect for the people fuels discontent and increases tensions within society.

It is therefore imperative to rethink governance in Africa to avoid the multiplication of coups d’état. This requires leaders with integrity, responsibility and concern for the well-being of their people. The international community must also play a role by supporting democratic initiatives and putting in place monitoring mechanisms to prevent abuses by leaders.

In conclusion, coups in Africa pose a serious threat to the continent’s democracy and stability. It is time for African leaders to realize their responsibility in this situation and sincerely commit to respecting democratic principles. Virtuous and transparent governance is the key to preventing coups from becoming the norm in Africa.
