The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are fast approaching and qualifying for this long-awaited event is underway in many sports, including boxing. And the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) can rejoice in the performance of its pugilists during the Africa Zone qualifiers.
Congolese boxer Marcelat Sakobi created a surprise by qualifying for the final phase of the Paris Olympic Games. In the under 57 kg category, she won a decisive victory over Nigeria’s Jojo Joy in the semi-finals in Dakar, Senegal. This qualification comes in addition to his participation in the Tokyo Games in 2020, which demonstrates the regularity and excellence of his level.
Unfortunately, Bénédicte Diyoka, another Congolese boxer, failed to qualify. In the under 53 kg category, she was beaten on points by the Moroccan Moutaki. A defeat which puts an end to his dream of participating in the Paris Olympic Games.
On the men’s side, Steve Kulenguluka also shone during these qualifiers. In the under 71 kg category, he won his fight by points, thus qualifying for the final against the Egyptian Omar Elawady. An additional chance to rise among the best and proudly represent the DRC during the Olympic Games.
Despite the defeat of Idris Kitangila, who lost on points, the DRC therefore has two boxers qualified for the finals of the qualifiers. A performance that highlights the talent and hard work of these Congolese athletes, ready to give everything to obtain a place on the Olympic podium.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games promise to be an exciting edition and Congolese boxers have already shown that they have their place among the world elite. Their presence in the finals of the qualifiers is a real source of pride for the DRC and a source of inspiration for Congolese youth, who see in these athletes models of perseverance and excellence.
Eyes are now on the final and the hope of seeing the Congolese boxers shine and bring home medals for their country. Whether it is Marcelat Sakobi or Steve Kulenguluka, their determination and talent allow them to legitimately claim success. The DRC is ready to support and encourage them in their quest for Olympic excellence.
