“Kwango: The slow pace of road rehabilitation work arouses the anger of civil society”

Recent news in Kwango province has highlighted problems linked to the slowness of certain rehabilitation works carried out by the K2 company. As part of the government program aimed at rehabilitating 1,200 kilometers of stabilized earth roads in Greater Bandundu, the K2 company was awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of the road axis going from Kenge to Musamba, over a distance of 250 km.

Unfortunately, despite the launch of this work on December 25, 2022, the K2 company has only rehabilitated 10 kilometers of road, a tiny part of the expected 250 kilometers. This situation has aroused the anger of the provincial consultation framework of civil society in Kwango, which denounces the slowness and lack of progressivity in the execution of this work.

The provincial government also recognized this situation and praised the courage of Kwango civil society for denouncing this situation. He specified that the K2 company had already received 80% of the funds allocated to this project, which makes the situation all the more worrying.

Faced with this situation, the provincial civil society consultation framework strongly criticized the silence of senators, national and provincial deputies, as well as the provincial government. He also issued recommendations, calling on the central government to be more vigilant in awarding contracts, selecting companies with the necessary experience and expertise in the field of roads. It also requests a monitoring and evaluation mission to check the progress of the work and audit the use of funds allocated to the K2 company.

This situation highlights the pitfalls facing infrastructure projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where slow execution and lack of transparency in the use of funds are commonplace. It is therefore essential that measures are taken to ensure the proper execution of such projects, in order to improve the country’s infrastructure and promote its economic development.

The population of Kwango province is impatiently awaiting the complete rehabilitation of the road from Kenge to Musamba, which will facilitate the movement of residents and contribute to the development of the region. Hopefully, concrete actions will be taken to resolve this issue and complete the rehabilitation works on schedule.
