“ICGLR Regional Forum: Towards responsible gold mining in the Great Lakes region”

The ICGLR strategy for artisanal and small-scale gold mining was at the heart of the regional forum which was held from September 12 to 16. This meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, aimed to find solutions to stabilize the illicit exploitation of gold, a sector which remains dangerous for operators.

In his opening speech, the Prime Minister paid tribute to President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo for his leadership in the organization of this forum. He also stressed the importance of combating illegal practices and promoting responsible gold trade in the Great Lakes region.

Indeed, the gold trade in this region generates serious problems such as illegal mining, conflict financing and human rights violations. It is therefore essential to put in place traceability mechanisms in order to eliminate these harmful practices and guarantee responsible and legal extraction of artisanal gold.

This regional forum, organized by the ICGLR Secretariat and the Congolese Government, was an important step to strengthen cooperation and sustainable development in the gold industry. It allowed participants, mining experts, to share their knowledge and address the complex challenges facing countries in the region.

The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the ICGLR Member States who participated in this forum and encouraged them to work together to strengthen the traceability of gold and promote more responsible and ethical trade.

In conclusion, this regional forum was a unique opportunity to bring together experts and key stakeholders to find sustainable solutions to artisanal and small-scale gold mining in the Great Lakes region. The establishment of traceability mechanisms and a responsible approach are essential to ensure equitable economic development and preserve human rights.
