“Fight against malaria and river blindness in the DRC: Fortescue is mobilizing to improve the health and well-being of local communities”

Fight against malaria and river blindness in the Democratic Republic of Congo – Fortescue Initiative

Mining company Fortescue recently launched an initiative to combat malaria and river blindness in the Inga region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Fortescue is committed to strengthening existing public health measures and actively involving local communities in this fight.

The program put in place by Fortescue will include several key actions. Firstly, there will be regular spraying inside and outside homes, as well as the use of larvicides every three months in the Inga region. This approach aims to eliminate mosquitoes carrying the malaria disease.

In addition, a spraying campaign will be carried out under the supervision of health authorities to reduce the population of “black flies” responsible for river blindness. Finally, a training program will be offered to members of local communities so that they can actively participate in vector control measures, under the supervision of health specialists.

Fortescue’s aim is to contribute significantly to reducing the prevalence of malaria and river blindness in the Inga region and surrounding villages. This initiative is part of a global approach to combating tropical diseases, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has significant potential in terms of renewable energy and green industries. Fortescue is committed to supporting and empowering local communities to drive the development of the green economy in the country. This includes improving access to electricity and promoting economic growth.

By working closely with local authorities and actively involving communities, Fortescue aims to make its green industries project in the DRC one of the largest sources of renewable energy in the world. The aim is to create a sustainable model that benefits both the environment and local people.

This Fortescue initiative was welcomed at its launch, with the presence of diplomatic representatives from several partner countries. It demonstrates the company’s commitment to using its resources and expertise to actively contribute to the fight against diseases and the promotion of sustainable development.
