“The support of the United States and the European Union for the development of the trans-African Lobito corridor: a key partnership for the economic development of Africa”

The development of the Trans-African Lobito Corridor, which connects the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and Zambia, has attracted the interest of the United States and the European Union. At the Global Infrastructure and Investment Partnership (GIIP) meeting held at the G20 in India, both sides welcomed the commitment of the three countries to support this project.

The United States and the European Union announced that they would join the governments of the DRC, Angola and Zambia to accelerate construction of this railway, which will connect the south of the DRC and North West Zambia to regional and global trade markets via Lobito Port.

To concretize their support, the United States and the European Union have proposed launching feasibility studies for the construction of a new railway line between Zambia and Angola. This collaborative approach illustrates the desire of the USA and the EU to reproduce this model in other strategic corridors around the world, within the framework of the PGII.

The envisaged areas of cooperation also include investments in transport infrastructure, measures to facilitate trade and economic development, as well as support for related sectors. The ultimate objective is to foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the Lobito Corridor countries.

Financial and technical support from the United States and the European Union will modernize key infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa, boosting the region’s economic potential. Clean energy projects, investments in mineral and renewable energy supply chains, as well as expanding digital access and developing agricultural value chains are envisaged.

The completion of the Lobito Corridor will provide numerous benefits, including improved export opportunities for the DRC, Zambia and Angola, improved movement of goods in the region, increased mobility of citizens and reduced costs logistics and carbon footprint.

This collaboration between the United States, the European Union and the countries of the Lobito Corridor marks an important step towards sustainable economic development in Africa. By joining forces, they hope to unlock the region’s economic potential and foster long-term inclusive growth.

In conclusion, the support of the United States and the European Union for the development of the Trans-African Lobito Corridor demonstrates their commitment to the economic development of Africa. This collaboration aims to modernize infrastructure, stimulate investments and foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the region.
