Construction work on the new Constitutional Court building, Congolese government funding and financial support from UNDP

The Constitutional Court of the Democratic Republic of Congo is preparing to acquire a new prestigious headquarters, which will allow it to best exercise its mission as guardian of the Constitution. The construction work on this building, financed by the Congolese government with financial support from UNDP, is expected to last 10 months.

The laying of the first stone was orchestrated by the President of the Republic, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, who sees this new building as an opportunity to strengthen the role and credibility of the Constitutional Court in the country.

According to the architect in charge of the project, the new headquarters of the Constitutional Court will have a pyramidal shape inspired by the Nyiragongo volcano, emblem of the volcanic relief of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This architecture aims to underline the importance of the decisions taken by the Constitutional Court and to highlight the singularity of this institution.

Located in the Royal district of the commune of Gombe, the new headquarters of the Constitutional Court will include a large courtroom as well as offices and work spaces spread over 4 floors. This modern and functional building will offer constitutional judges optimal working conditions to carry out their missions.

The laying of the first stone was greeted by the President of the Constitutional Court, Dieudonné Kamuleta, who expressed his gratitude to the Head of State for his support and commitment to constitutional justice.

The Constitutional Court, resulting from the reform of the judicial power and the breakup of the Supreme Court of Justice, plays an essential role in the Congolese legal system. Its decisions are irrevocable and influence the political and legal life of the country.

With this new seat, the Constitutional Court is equipped with a modern and symbolic framework, which testifies to the importance given to this institution in safeguarding the rule of law in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
