Title: Lubumbashi: Power and water outages following cable theft from pylons
Introduction :
In the city of Lubumbashi, capital of the Haut-Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, many neighborhoods are facing problems with water and electricity supply. This situation results from the collapse of two pylons following an attempted theft of cables on the high voltage line of the national electricity company (SNEL) at the South-UNILU distributor. Since last Friday, nearly 48 cabins have been deprived of connection to the SNEL network, thus impacting the daily life of the city’s residents.
The consequences of the incident:
Residents of Lubumbashi neighborhoods, particularly the university campuses, the Gambela, Kiwele, Kalubwe neighborhoods, as well as the Kampemba neighborhoods (Bel-Air, industrial, Luano), Ruashi and Annex have experienced interruptions in the supply of drinking water since last September 8. In addition, the absence of electricity in these areas has significant repercussions on their daily lives, making access to lighting, household appliances and communication services difficult.
Measures taken by SNEL:
Faced with this situation, the national electricity company is doing everything possible to quickly restore electricity supply to the affected neighborhoods. Intensive work is underway on the 50 KVA UNILU line to replace the collapsed pylons. A team of agents is mobilized to move quickly and restore electricity to the affected areas.
The southern regional director of SNEL, Jean Marie Mutombo, deplores the repeated thefts of electrical cables on high voltage lines. It also highlights the danger of erecting brick kilns under these lines, calling for the security of electrical installations which are part of the public heritage of the State.
REGIDESO, drinking water supplier, assures the inhabitants of Lubumbashi that the water supply will be restored once the work on the collapsed SNEL pylons is completed.
Conclusion :
The electricity and water outages faced by residents of Lubumbashi following cable thefts from SNEL pylons highlight the importance of securing electrical installations and the need to take measures to prevent such incidents. the future. The mobilization of SNEL and REGIDESO teams to quickly restore electricity and water supply is essential for the well-being of the city’s residents.
