Free maternity in Kinshasa: A major step forward for Congolese women
Since September 5, free maternity and care for newborns has become a reality in the city of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This decision, taken by the President of the Republic, aims to facilitate access to health care for pregnant women and to reduce the maternal and infant mortality rate.
According to information reported by Radio Okapi reporters, the measure of free maternity is already in application in certain health centers in the Congolese capital. Women were able to give birth and receive the necessary care without having to pay money. This is particularly the case at the Bangu Health Center, in the commune of Ngaliema, where the medical director, Ghislain Kabange, affirms that free access is effective.
However, there are still a few health centers and hospitals finalizing final adjustments before implementing this measure. The Ministry of Public Health anticipates that more than 320 health centers and 50 general reference hospitals will be affected by this free maternity program in Kinshasa.
To inform the population about the health establishments affected by this measure, the Ministry of Public Health recommended that the population dial the number *151# on mobile phones to obtain the list of participating hospitals.
This measure of free maternity represents a major advance for Congolese women. Indeed, many financial barriers can prevent pregnant women from accessing necessary medical care during pregnancy and childbirth.
