Training of Congolese police forces to ensure the security of the December 2023 elections
The UN Mission for Stabilization in the DRC (MONUSCO) launched a training session to strengthen the operational capacities of the Congolese police in view of the elections scheduled for December 2023. In total, 1,730 police elements, including 1,000 from the town of Beni and 700 from Oicha, are participating in this 3-month training.
The objective of this training is to prepare police officers to ensure the security of the electoral process, by teaching them techniques for maintaining and restoring public order, professional intervention gestures and techniques, as well as defense techniques. and arrest.
The training also aims to raise awareness among police forces of respect for human rights and the need to exercise discernment and self-control in all circumstances.
For senior commissioner Michel Mbala, commander of the PNC of the Oicha District, this training comes at an opportune time, as the country prepares for the next elections. He underlines the importance of equipping the police to ensure the security of political meetings and possible excesses between candidates or supporters while preserving a close relationship with the population.
This MONUSCO initiative thus contributes to strengthening the capacity of the Congolese police forces to guarantee a free, fair and secure electoral process.
