Raymond Ndong Sima appointed transitional Prime Minister in Gabon: A new hope for the country’s political stability

Raymond Ndong Sima appointed transitional Prime Minister in Gabon

In a surprising announcement, General Brice Oligui Nguema, president of the transition in Gabon, named Raymond Ndong Sima as transitional prime minister. This appointment comes a week after the overthrow of President Ali Bongo by the military.

Raymond Ndong Sima, a renowned economist and former Prime Minister of Ali Bongo from 2012 to 2014, had become a fierce opponent of the power in place. He ran against the head of state in the presidential elections of 2016 and 2023, before withdrawing in favor of a common opposition candidate.

General Oligui Nguema, who led the coup d’état against Ali Bongo on August 30, was sworn in as president of the transition and promised free elections at the end of this period. He also announced the formation of a transitional government composed of personalities from all political sides.

Shortly after his appointment, Raymond Ndong Sima expressed his desire to submit a proposal for a transitional government to General Oligui Nguema in the coming days. He wishes to consult widely and bring together members of all political families within the government.

This appointment marks a turning point in the political situation in Gabon, as the country goes through a period of transition after the coup d’état. While some support the move as a way to ease political tensions, others are concerned about the influence of the military in the democratic transition process.

It remains to be seen how Raymond Ndong Sima and the transitional government will manage to restore institutional order and organize free and fair elections in a tense political climate. The road to democracy and political stability still remains uncertain for Gabon.
