“UNESCO is committed to education in the DRC: better schooling for all children”

UNESCO renews its commitment to education in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). During a United Nations press conference, Isaias Barreto Da Rosa, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative in the DRC, stressed the importance of continuing to support and accompany the country’s education sector.

One of the main issues identified is the integration of a large number of children aged six to eleven who are not in school. Therefore, the implementation of the measure of free basic education in the DRC is welcomed as a means of achieving schooling for all children in the primary cycle.

The announcements come in the run-up to International Literacy Day, celebrated annually on September 8. This year’s theme is “Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition, Building the Foundations of Sustainable and Peaceful Societies”. This day highlights the importance of literacy for individual and collective development.

The following day, September 9, will be the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. This day aims to raise awareness of the need to protect schools and children from violent attacks and to ensure access to safe and quality education, whatever the circumstances.

UNESCO plays a key role in promoting education in the DRC and around the world. Its continued support for the education sector in the DRC demonstrates its commitment to access to education for all children, and its work to build sustainable and peaceful societies through literacy.

It is essential to emphasize the importance of education as a lever for personal and collective development. By guaranteeing access to quality education, the DRC can open up many opportunities for its younger generations and thus promote its socio-economic development.

UNESCO’s renewed commitment to the DRC is encouraging news. By supporting education, the organization helps build a better future for Congolese children and strengthen the foundations of a sustainable and peaceful society. Hopefully, these efforts will achieve the set goals and give every child the opportunity to realize their potential through education.
