Extraordinary Congress of the UDPS: Félix Tshisekedi confirmed as candidate for the presidential election of December 2023

The Extraordinary Congress of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) took place successfully this Saturday, August 26 in Nganda Yalha (N’Sele), marking an important moment in the history of the party. The event was marked by the confirmation of Félix Tshisekedi’s candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for December 20, 2023.

Under the aegis of Augustin Kabuya, secretary general of the UDPS, the Congress brought together fighters and senior party officials, as well as members of the allied parties of the Sacred Union. Among the personalities present were the President of the Senate, Professor Bahati Lukwebo, the secretary general of the UDPS, Kibasa, and that of the UNC, Billy Kambale.

In his inaugural speech, Augustin Kabuya recalled the origins of the candidacy of Félix Tshisekedi, chosen in December 2018 in Kisantu. He then invited the congressmen to debate the future of the party and to make an independent decision on the presidential candidacy.

During the Congress, several resolutions were adopted, including that elevating Félix Tshisekedi to the rank of “High Political Authority of Reference” of the party. Moreover, his mandate as head of the party has been renewed for the next five years.

The implementation of these resolutions will be ensured by Augustin Kabuya Tshilumba, who has received full powers to represent the UDPS and engage the party in all necessary steps. In addition, he will be responsible for convening the next congress responsible for deciding on changes to the UDPS statutes.

It is interesting to note that Vital Kamerhe’s Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC) also designated Félix Tshisekedi as its candidate for the presidential election of December 2023 during its own mini-congress last Saturday, August 19.

This confirmation of Félix Tshisekedi’s candidacy for the presidency sparks numerous debates and arouses the curiosity of the Congolese population. With the active participation of the allied parties of the Sacred Union, this decision is seen as a strategic choice aimed at strengthening the unity and political stability of the country.

Now, everything remains to be done for Félix Tshisekedi and the UDPS. The coming months will be crucial for preparing his electoral campaign and facing the political and social challenges that await the Democratic Republic of Congo. But with the support of his party and political alliances, Felix Tshisekedi is determined to lead the country towards a better future.
