Tensions are escalating in Las Anod: a territorial dispute between Somaliland and Somalia threatens the stability of the region.

Reflecting lingering tensions, the recent scuffles in the town of Las Anod are reigniting age-old rivalries between Somalia and Somaliland. Located in the heart of a disputed region, this city has been the scene of recurring conflicts for several years. While the situation seemed to have calmed down in recent months, a new escalation of violence has been observed, jeopardizing the stability of the region.

Last Friday, a local militia announced that it had taken control of a military base near Las Anod, raising public concern and triggering a massive military mobilization. This takeover follows the demands of local clan leaders for the attachment of Las Anod to Somalia, which had already provoked deadly clashes last February.

Las Anod, in addition to being a strategic commercial crossroads, is also a strong political symbol for Somaliland, a self-declared republic in 1991 but never recognized by the international community. Over the years, territorial rivalries between Somaliland and Somalia have escalated, creating strong tension in the Las Anod region.

The consequences of these conflicts are tragic for the local population. Last February, the clashes claimed the lives of more than 200 civilians and injured nearly 700 people. Medical infrastructure had also become targets, forcing the organization Médecins Sans Frontières to suspend its activities in a hospital in the city.

Faced with this worrying situation, the President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, promised that the army would take revenge. However, it is crucial to seek a peaceful and lasting solution to this territorial dispute, in order to avoid further loss of life and promote the development of the region.

The international community must also play a key role in resolving this dispute, by encouraging dialogue and supporting peace initiatives between the authorities of Somaliland and Somalia. It is essential that the two parties reach a compromise that guarantees the stability and security of the Las Anod region, while respecting the aspirations of its population.

In conclusion, the situation in Las Anod testifies to the complexity of territorial issues in the region and the political rivalries that persist between Somaliland and Somalia. It is imperative to favor diplomatic channels and seek a peaceful solution that preserves the safety and well-being of the inhabitants of this city.
