Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo: the candidate who could change the face of Mexico
Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, a 61-year-old politician, was recently nominated as a presidential candidate in Mexico by the ruling party, Morena. Polls predict a comfortable victory for Sheinbaum, which would make her the first woman elected to the presidency of Mexico since its independence in 1821. This appointment is part of the left turn that the country is taking, under the influence of Morena and its founder, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Claudia Sheinbaum’s political career is remarkable. She began her career as Mexico City’s environmental public policy officer, working alongside AMLO, then mayor of the capital. She was then elected head of the Tlalpan district in southern Mexico City before becoming mayor of the city in 2018. Her term was marked by tragedies, such as the collapse of line 12 of the metro Mexico in 2021, which caused many victims. Despite this, she was able to maintain high popularity thanks to her hard work and direct contact with citizens. She was known for regularly holding meetings with residents to listen to their problems and propose concrete solutions.
