Socio-economic activities have timidly resumed in Goma after recent demonstrations by followers of the mystical-religious “Wazalendo” sect. Despite the relative calm, psychosis persists in some areas of the city.
On Wednesday evening, a military device was still in place in Nyabushongo, where the Wazalendo church building was set on fire. Authorities reported the death of seven people and numerous injuries, as well as extensive property damage.
Despite this tense climate, a few banks, service stations and informal businesses have reopened. However, the population remains on its guard, because although the weapons have ceased to crackle, the fear persists.
The medical structures of the city are overwhelmed by the influx of wounded. The CBCA Ndosho hospital, in particular, uses doctors and voluntary blood donors to provide for the needs of the victims.
The inhabitants of Goma were awakened by heavy gunfire early in the morning, in the neighborhoods of Ndosho, Kyeshero and surroundings. This situation has plunged the city into a climate of insecurity and uncertainty.
It is important to emphasize that the presence of MONUSCO and the regional EAC force was strongly contested by followers of the Wazalendo sect. The latter reproach these international forces for not respecting their beliefs and their way of life.
