“The violence of the ADF rebels continues to sow terror in Beni: civil society is sounding the alarm”

The appalling attacks perpetrated by ADF rebels in the Beni region of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to sow terror and death among the civilian population. According to civil society in the Beni territory, more than a hundred people have lost their lives since the beginning of August in targeted attacks in the villages of Mabuo, Mbingi, Moliso, Makwanga and on the Eringeti- Kainama.

This critical security situation is prompting civil society to issue a cry of alarm and denounce the silence of the authorities. Richard Kirimba, first vice-president of civil society in Beni, underlines that the region seems to be abandoned to the militia and calls for a strengthening of joint operations between the armed forces of the DRC and the UPDF (Ugandan People’s Defense Forces) to restore state authority and protect local populations.

In this context, it is crucial that military operations be supported by the population itself. Anthony Mwalushayi, spokesperson for Sokola 1 operations, emphasizes that the army cannot succeed without the support and collaboration of the population. It is therefore essential to strengthen the link between the armed forces and civil society to put an end to this spiral of violence.

This dramatic situation highlights the urgency of dealing with the issue of security in the Beni region. The authorities must take concrete measures to protect the population and put an end to the abuses committed by armed groups. Serious and effective operations are needed to restore peace and stability in this part of the country.

It is also essential to underline the crucial role of civil society in denouncing this violence and in finding solutions to guarantee the security of local communities. The voice of civil society must be heard and listened to by the authorities to put an end to this tragedy which is playing out on a daily basis in the Beni region.

In conclusion, it is essential that concrete and effective measures are taken to put an end to the violence perpetrated by ADF rebels in the Beni region. Collaboration between the armed forces, civil society and the authorities is essential to restore security and protect the population. It is time to put an end to this tragic situation and allow the inhabitants to live in peace and security
