The Congolese population is once again confronted with a horrific act of violence. On Friday August 26, in Luotu village, Lubero territory in North Kivu, a couple was burned alive by an angry mob accusing them of witchcraft.
The scene is unimaginably cruel. The husband was beheaded before his body was set on fire, under the helpless eyes of the police who could not intervene for lack of sufficient manpower to control the crowd.
This act of “popular justice” is not only inhuman but also illegal. It is important to stress that justice should never be done by the people, but rather by the competent authorities, within the framework of an established legal system.
The local authorities condemned this act of violence and Colonel Alain Kiwewa, administrator of the territory of Lubero, requested police reinforcements to ensure the security of the region. This tragic event highlights the need for a reinforced police presence to prevent such acts of violence and guarantee the safety of citizens.
It is necessary that measures be taken to fight against ignorance, superstition and the violence of mob justice. Education and awareness are essential tools to promote understanding, tolerance and respect for human rights.
It is important that Congolese society mobilize to condemn such acts and promote justice and respect for human rights. Violence will never solve problems, it will only perpetuate a vicious cycle of suffering and chaos.
We hope that the competent authorities will take concrete measures to prevent such acts of violence and guarantee the safety of all citizens
