“UDPS defends the cause of the Congo in the face of Rwandan aggression during the meeting of the Socialist International: a call for support for the restoration of peace in the east of the country.”

The UDPS, a Congolese political party, took part in the meetings of the Africa Committee of the Socialist International which took place in June 2023. During this meeting, Vice-President Augustin Kabuya defended his country’s cause in the face of the aggression and the presence of Rwandan troops on Congolese soil. He called for the support of the Socialist International for the restoration of peace in the eastern part of the country.

The theme addressed during this meeting was the consolidation of democracy and the strengthening of the capacities of States in the African region. The presentation of national reports, the development of an action plan for the Dakar Declaration and the election of a new president for the Africa committee were also on the agenda.

Mr. Kabuya denounced the unhealthy attitude of the political opposition which is trying to block the progress made in the proper functioning of institutions since the arrival of Felix Antoine Tshisekedi in power. He called for national unity and expressed the wish that the Socialist International would obtain observer status in the December 2023 elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This meeting also led to the election of a new president for the Africa committee, in the person of Saleh Kebzabo, the current Chadian Prime Minister. The members of the presidium were received by former President Mahamadou Issoufou and the current Mohamed Bazoum. A final communiqué and a press conference closed the meeting.

In short, the UDPS took part in this international meeting to defend the cause of its country and to be part of a dynamic of consolidation of democracy in Africa.
