“The battle in Ukraine: the current situation and the challenges ahead”

Today, the situation in Ukraine in the context of the battle between the Ukrainian army and the Russian forces seems to be increasingly complex. Although there has been very little progress on the part of the Ukrainians in the past few weeks in regaining control of the southern zone which they wish to sanctuary, the difficulty comes mainly from air superiority and the Russian firepower which leave them vulnerable.

The conflict, which began two weeks ago, is already difficult for the Ukrainian forces to manage. Faced with the formidable efficiency of the Russian combat helicopters, the Ukrainians do not have enough equipment to frame their tank attacks, leaving them vulnerable to ranged attacks.

The counter-offensive also came up against fortifications put in place by the Russian forces, such as dragon’s teeth, anti-tank concrete blocks, trenches and minefields. It is therefore difficult for the Ukrainians to progress without suffering heavy losses.

For General Jérôme Pellistrandi, director of the Revue Défense Nationale, the Russians have been fortifying their southern zone for several weeks, the Ukrainians must therefore break through the various Russian defense lines to reach the Sea of Azov. As for the Russians, they are now on the defensive but have an increased effectiveness of their ground forces.

According to the Estonian services, the Ukrainian army is about to take a break of at least several days in order to reorganize, because the difficulty for them will be to hold out over time with enough forces to renew those on the front line, and enough ammunition to keep the fire going.

In short, the continuation of the conflict in Ukraine will remain very uncertain and complex, as the stakes are high and the positions of the various forces present difficult to move.
