For several years, the province of Ituri has been the scene of armed conflicts which have caused the death of hundreds of people. In 2017, the CODECO militia was born, spreading terror in the region. Faced with this situation, military operations were carried out to neutralize these militiamen. However, Lieutenant-General Luboya N’Kashama had to stop military operations because of accusations of disproportionate use of force.
Unfortunately, despite the cessation of operations, the killings continued and the population of Ituri demanded that the security forces resume their intervention. During a press conference, Luboya N’Kashama announced the resumption of military operations. This time, helicopters will also be used to track down the militiamen hiding in the population.
The state of siege in Ituri was established in May 2021 to fight against CODECO militias and ADF rebels. Despite the agreements signed, the militias have not ceased their violent actions. General Luboya thus reassured the population by saying that operations would resume with the same intensity.
It should be noted that the ADF rebels are also present in the regions of Irumu and Mambasa, thus exacerbating the security situation in the province of Ituri.
Through these events, we can see that the security situation in the DRC remains fragile, despite the efforts of the government and the security forces. It is crucial to find lasting solutions to ensure peace in the country and protect civilians
