“Congolese opposition meeting in Kinshasa: a march for truth and credible elections”

The political climate has been tense in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for several weeks, and it does not seem ready to stop. Despite the difficulties encountered by the Congolese opposition, the latter confirmed the holding of a popular meeting this Saturday, June 17, 2023 in Kinshasa at the Sainte-Thérèse field in N’djili. The 4 leaders Martin Fayulu Madidi, Moïse Katumbi Chapwe, Matata Ponyo and Sesanga Hipungu wanted to reassure their supporters by sending them a message of struggle for credible and inclusive elections in the DRC.

This decision by the Congolese opposition did not fail to arouse the anger of the power in place, which threatens to barricade the site, under the pretext of carrying out land repair work. Martin Fayulu’s right-hand man, Prince Epenge, warns that despite the intimidation and pressure suffered, the opposition is exercising its constitutional right and will indeed hold its activity.

The rally scheduled for Saturday June 17 was described as a “march for truth” by Prince Epenge who stressed the importance of giving a clear direction to the population and drawing a political line for the electoral deadlines in the DRC. Opposition leaders intend to give real political direction to the Congolese people, setting the course for inclusive elections and avoiding chaos.

Despite the repressions suffered by the Congolese opposition in recent days, Prince Epenge, assures that these actions also aim to denounce the insecurity which is stabilizing durably in several corners of the country. He rose up against Félix Tshisekedi, current president of the DRC, by denouncing the fact that part of Congo is directed by Museveni.

In a difficult political context, the power in place continues to put pressure on the opposition, and political tensions continue to grow in the DRC. The next election at the end of the year therefore promises to be eventful
