Ten years later, RFI commemorates the double assassination of its reporters, Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon in Kidal, in northern Mali. On November 2, 2013, these two journalists were kidnapped by jihadists while they were reporting to prepare a series of programs on reconciliation and the reconstruction of Mali. Their tragic disappearance marked a turning point in the history of journalism and reminded us of the dangerousness of this profession.
In order to perpetuate the memory of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon, RFI is launching the tenth edition of the Bourse which bears their name. This Fellowship aims to reward and train young African journalists and technicians, by transmitting to them the professionalism and passion for reporting that characterized the two journalists who died. Applications are open to the 25 French-speaking countries of the African continent and the training will take place in Abidjan. The selected candidates will thus have the opportunity to participate in workshops and produce a report or a sound element, supervised by a jury composed of representatives of RFI, the Ivorian press, the School of Journalism of Sciences Po and the ‘INA.
This scholarship, created in tribute to Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon, aims to encourage the new generation of African journalists to exercise their profession with professionalism and commitment. By awarding this scholarship, RFI also wishes to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and respect for the safety of journalists.
In commemorating the tragedy that cost the lives of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon, RFI also recalls the importance of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Committed against Journalists, celebrated each year on November 2. This day aims to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession and to recall the importance of prosecuting those responsible for these crimes.
The Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Fellowship therefore represents a unique opportunity for young talents in African journalism to receive quality training and to pay tribute to the two deceased journalists. By perpetuating their heritage, these young journalists will be able to contribute to the promotion of quality information and the defense of the fundamental values of freedom of the press.
To participate in the Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship, candidates are invited to send their application including an application form, a curriculum vitae and a cover letter. Journalists must also submit a report or a sound element, while technicians must present an editing/mixing or an on-air production. Applications are open until Friday, August 25 midnight, Paris time.
By paying tribute to Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon, RFI demonstrates its commitment to journalism and freedom of expression. The Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for young African journalists and technicians to develop their skills and contribute to the evolution of the media landscape in Africa
