Faced with the deterioration of the telephone network, Chad is taking severe measures. Airtel is forced to pay a fine of 5 billion CFA francs for “non-compliance with investment commitments”. This sanction comes following numerous complaints from the operator’s users concerning disruptions in calls, SMS and internet coverage.
The observation of the management of Airtel Tchad last June is clear: the quality of the network is defective at times and in places. Critics abound from customers, denouncing high prices for poor network quality.
In April, the Minister of Telecommunications and the Digital Economy summoned the heads of Airtel and Moov Africa, the two companies operating in Chad, to urge them to take measures to avoid further malfunctions.
This week, the Regulatory Council of the electronic and postal communications regulatory authority therefore took action, considering that the investments made by Airtel are not sufficient in relation to the commitments provided for in the specifications signed in 2021.
It should be noted that the operators had already been sanctioned three years ago for similar reasons.
The managing director of Airtel Chad had assured in July that improvements would be made in the next three to six months thanks to the installation of optical fiber.
