“The glimmer of hope: women are candidates in greater numbers in the legislative elections in the DRC”

Title: The encouraging increase in female candidacies in the legislative elections in the DRC

Introduction :
Legislative elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are fast approaching, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) has recently published the lists of candidates. A glimmer of hope appears in the Congolese political landscape, with a significant increase in the number of women candidates compared to previous elections. However, despite this encouraging progress, cultural challenges, fear, financial constraints and political obstacles continue to hinder the full political participation of women in the country.

Analysis of limiting factors:
According to young Kinshasa women interviewed, several factors explain this low female representation in politics in the DRC. On the one hand, fear plays a major dissuasive role, women reluctant to embark on an environment often perceived as hostile and dominated by men. On the other hand, the cultural dimension is also pointed out, with a predominant conception according to which politics is the domain reserved for men. This perception, anchored in Congolese society, limits the political aspirations of women and pushes them to engage in other sectors of activity. Moreover, the low representation of women in political parties and their lack of voice and influence in parliament result in a vicious circle, thus discouraging new female candidates from entering politics.

Suggested solutions :
Despite these challenges, the young women interviewed are full of resilience and offer concrete recommendations to encourage women’s political participation in the DRC. They underline the importance of sensitization and emulation among women, in order to arouse their interest in politics and to show that they have their place in this field. They also encourage women to join political parties massively, in order to be able to exercise power and influence decisions. In addition, some recommend considering a new law with constraints to guarantee a proportional representation of women on electoral lists. Finally, education, equal pay and financial support for women candidates are also key aspects to promote their political participation.

Conclusion :
The increase in female candidates for legislative elections in the DRC is a positive sign of change. However, many obstacles remain and still hinder the full participation of women in politics. To turn this encouraging trial into a real step towards gender equality, it is essential to continue to sensitize, encourage and support women candidates.. Only in this way will they be able to enjoy their political rights and contribute fully to the democratic and social development of the DRC
