Declaration of the Conference of Bishops of Togo on the situation in Niger: the call for diplomacy and solidarity for a peaceful resolution of the crisis

Statement of the Conference of Bishops of Togo (CET) on the situation prevailing in Niger

In a recent statement, the Conference of Bishops of Togo (CET) expressed its solidarity with the people of Niger and called on political decision-makers to favor the diplomatic route in resolving the crisis in this neighboring country. The ETC also highlighted the interdependence between West African countries and the need to work together to address the challenges of security and violent extremism.

The CET statement follows a call for solidarity and prayer launched by the President of the United Episcopal Conferences of West Africa (CERAO/RECOWA) for a Triduum of prayers and adoration in favor of the Niger. The Togolese bishops responded to this call by organizing prayers in all the parishes of the country in order to support their Nigerien brothers and sisters.

The ETC also calls for the lifting of the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS, believing that these affect first and foremost the civilian populations, in particular women and children. The Bishops recognize the need to find a peaceful solution to the crisis and call on political decision-makers to show discernment and responsibility in their actions.

The ETC statement highlights the crucial role of diplomacy, dialogue and mediation in conflict resolution. It stresses the importance of taking into account the aspirations and needs of populations who are the first victims of violence and war. The Togolese bishops therefore call for restraint and the search for a consensus to reach a lasting solution.

In conclusion, the Conference of Bishops of Togo reaffirms its solidarity with the people of Niger and asks political decision-makers to favor the path of dialogue and negotiation. She also calls for the lifting of sanctions and encourages all the faithful to continue to pray for peace and stability in Niger
