Security in the DRC is negatively impacting blood donations, according to Dr. Emmanuel Amisi Sefu, head of the Blood Transfusion Center in Butembo. There are many requests for blood, especially in the hospitals of the Provincial Health Division at the Butembo branch. Health zones do not benefit from mobile blood collections for the wounded interned in hospitals. In addition, some people refuse to donate blood, adding even more pressure on the CTC/Butembo.
On the sidelines of World Blood Donor Day, Melchior Kalungero Kasereka gave his blood for the first time, underlining the importance of this action. For him, there is no risk in donating blood.
The theme this year is Blood, investment, let’s share life, give often! It encourages frequent blood donations and emphasizes the importance of sharing this life.
This situation is critical for hospitals in the DRC and security is a major obstacle for blood donors. World Blood Donor Day is an opportunity to remember the importance of this vital action and the need to encourage frequent and regular blood donations.
