Security in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo was questioned by the public prosecutor during a hearing held on June 13. Indeed, the leaders of the national police in this region have been accused of negligence and lightness in their mission to secure the population and their property. This statement follows the trial of Édouard Mwangachuchu accused of having links with the M23 rebels, and prosecuted for treason, participation in an insurrectionary movement, espionage and illegal possession of weapons of war.
During the hearing, the provincial commissioner of the North Kivu PNC, François Xavier Aban Van, was not able to say where the ammunition used by the elements of the police who were committed to the security of the SMB. According to the public prosecutor, this demonstrates the levity and negligence that characterizes the management of the police in this region.
The situation in the province of North Kivu is worrying with the presence of armed groups and the proximity to the borders of Rwanda and Uganda. Community conflicts are also raging in this region and the population is often taken hostage.
Faced with this situation, it is urgent that the authorities take measures to strengthen security in the region and protect civilians. The economic and social development of the region is closely linked to stability and security. It is therefore crucial to put in place actions to fight against armed groups and the trafficking of arms and ammunition which fuel the conflicts in this fragile region.
In conclusion, the security situation in the province of North Kivu requires special attention from the authorities to ensure the protection of the populations and allow them to live in a safe environment conducive to development.
