Electoral reform in the DRC continues to be talked about. This Monday, June 12, 2023, the Senate had planned to examine the bill on the distribution of seats, but the senators who are members of the Front Commun pour le Congo (FCC) slammed the door of the plenary in protest. According to them, the electoral process is marred by fraud and the bill itself is biased. Elected officials close to former President Joseph Kabila have thus called for the establishment of several prerequisites, including a consensual CENI, an independent Constitutional Court and an inclusive electoral law.
On the sidelines of this political news, it should be recalled that the registration of voters continues in the country. The CENI notably announced the start of enrollment operations in the Kwamouth territory. However, obstacles remain to ensure the inclusion of women in this electoral process. While legal advances have been noted, many challenges remain to be met to enable equal representation of women in elective positions.
In a completely different field, two Congolese students won the national final of the OHADA international competition and will represent the DRC at the 2023 edition of “Génies en herbe”. A great achievement for these young Congolese talents.
Finally, let’s highlight the initiative of the Barrick Gold Corporation which decided to invest 25 million to save the white rhinos in the Garamba National Park. This critically endangered species requires enhanced protection to ensure its preservation.
These different news items demonstrate the diversity of the Congolese landscape, between political, educational, environmental and social issues. The DRC continues to evolve at a steady pace, despite the many challenges it faces
