Air France extends the suspension of its flights to the Sahel until the end of August
In a recent decision, the airline Air France announced the extension of the suspension of its flights to Mali and Burkina Faso until August 31 inclusive. Flights to Niger also remain suspended, but with no resumption date announced at this time.
This decision follows the closure of Niger’s airspace after the July 26 coup. Air France had initially suspended its flights to the Sahel on August 7, but had to extend this suspension due to the unstable geopolitical situation in the region.
Mali, whose military leaders have expressed their support for the Nigerien putschists, reacted by canceling Air France’s authorization to operate its flights between Paris and Bamako. This cancellation, valid until October, was justified by a “notorious failure” under the terms of the operating authorization of the French company.
Relations between France and Mali have deteriorated in recent months, especially since colonels seized power by force in Bamako in August 2020. The ruling junta expelled the French ambassador and sought a rapprochement of Russia politically and militarily.
This prolonged suspension of Air France flights to the Sahel highlights the challenges facing international airlines due to the political and security instability in the region. It also highlights the importance for travelers to closely monitor airline updates and educate themselves on travel restrictions and possible flight changes.
Travelers planning to visit the Sahel region are recommended to check the latest flight information and take the necessary steps to adjust their travel plans accordingly. Passenger safety and well-being remain the top priority for airlines, and airlines are adjusting their operations as the situation evolves to ensure safe and trouble-free travel
