Eastern DRC: the security crisis worsens despite the state of siege and calls for citizen action.

The situation in eastern DRC remains very worrying despite the establishment of a state of siege for two years. Indeed, the M23 terrorists and their allies from the Rwandan army (RDF) continue to occupy several localities, including Bunagana, in the territory of Rutshuru.

Faced with this situation, the citizen movement “LUCHA” called on the Congolese to mobilize to show their solidarity with the soldiers and civilians who were victims of this aggression. For LUCHA, the Congolese authorities are not in a position to regain control of the situation, and state intervention is not enough.

The citizen movement has proposed several solutions to end this crisis, including the immediate lifting of the state of siege, the diplomatic break with Rwanda and Uganda, the end of foreign military operations in the DRC. In addition, LUCHA recommends the establishment of a program for disarmament, demobilization, community reintegration and stabilization (PDDRC-S), as well as the creation of a special criminal court for the DRC.

The reality on the ground is alarming, and testimonies of violence and abuse are increasing. Armed groups continue to sow terror in the region, with serious consequences for the civilian population.

In this context, several articles have been published on the Fatshimetry blog. Topics include war crimes committed in the DRC, risks related to child labor in Kisangani, and plastic pollution in Butembo.

Finally, it is important to stress that the security situation in eastern DRC is complex and requires international attention. The support of the international community is crucial to help the country emerge from this crisis
