State of siege in North Kivu: a marked improvement in the security situation in Beni thanks to the neutralization of ADF rebel fighters

The security situation has improved in Beni since the establishment of a state of siege in the province of North Kivu in 2021. Democratic and allied forces have succeeded in neutralizing many fighters of the ADF rebellion, with a balance sheet rising to 907 dead.

Captain Anthony Mwalushay, spokesperson for the Sokola 1 Grand Nord military operations, confirmed that the ADF rebellion was strongly affected by this military offensive. The security forces have reduced the nuisance capacity of local militias such as that of Kyandenga, whose leader has been arrested.

Since May 2021, a state of siege has been enacted in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu to eradicate armed groups and facilitate the return of peace. This exceptional measure remains controversial, with social and political actors deeming it ineffective.

However, lately, the security situation seems to be gradually improving in several localities in Beni territory, as evidenced by the resumption of traffic on the Mbau-Kamango road, also known as the “triangle of death”.

It is hard to deny that the state of siege did not have an immediate impact on improving the security situation, but it is important to stress that it is an exceptional measure which requires time and resources to carry out. its fruits. Some social and political actors have called for an end to the state of siege, but it is essential to maintain pressure on the negative forces to stabilize the security situation and allow the populations to live in peace.

In sum, the progress is encouraging, but vigilance is required to maintain the trend and continue to work for a more peaceful and prosperous Congo.
