“Rebellion in eastern DRC: M23 rebels retake their military positions in Rutshuru territory”

News in the DRC: M23 rebels resume their military positions in Rutshuru territory

Since the end of 2022, the M23 rebels have taken up arms in the province of North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They occupied several villages and are now at the gates of the city of Goma. Despite a signed ceasefire, the rebels continue to gain ground, even taking historic military positions ceded to the regional EAC force.

According to the Congolese authorities, the M23 is being reinforced with new elements from Rwanda, a country bordering the DRC. However, the government believes that the Congolese defense and security forces are on high alert to counter this rebellion.

North Kivu and Ituri are under siege, and military operations continue in these areas to restore state authority and peace.

In addition to the danger posed by the M23, the citizens of the territories of Kenge and Popokabaka in the west live in terror of the Mobondo assailants, who regularly infiltrate these localities to torture, terrorize and steal.

During the same period, the CENI, the Independent National Electoral Commission, announced the start of voter registration operations in Kwamouth territory. The seat allocation bill continues to divide the Senate, as women’s groups call for their gender to be included in the elections.

In terms of culture, the Democratic Republic of Congo is delighted with the victory of two Congolese students in the national final of the OHADA international competition. Barrick Gold Corporation is investing $25 million to protect white rhinos in Garamba National Park, while Congolese politician Hortense Kavuo Maliro is running for president for inclusive governance in the DRC.

Deputy Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba Ngombo carried out an observation mission to Goma to assess the ongoing war in North Kivu.

Finally, CODECO, an armed group which had signed peace in 2020 with President Tshisekedi, committed a massacre of 41 displaced persons in the province of Ituri
