Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is preparing to host the XXth Games of La Francophonie, from July 28 to August 6, 2023. Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde presented the progress of preparations for this event during the 101st meeting of the Council of Ministers, indicating that the operations related to the organization and development of the sites have now been finalized. The areas of accommodation, catering, security, transport and health were specifically mentioned.
After Rabat and Casablanca (Morocco, 1989), Paris (France, 1994), Antananarivo (Madagascar, 1997), Ottawa and Hull (Canada, Canada-Quebec, 2001), Niamey (Niger, 2005), Beirut (Lebanon, 2009) , Nice (France, 2013) and Abidjan (Ivory Coast, 2017), Kinshasa will be the host city of the IX Games of La Francophonie in 2023. This event, which takes place every four years, aims to promote talents Francophone youth, by offering a four-year competition combining sporting events and cultural competitions, open to 18-35 year olds.
More than 3,500 participants took part in the previous edition in Côte d’Ivoire in 2017, where athletes and artists from 53 countries competed for 10 days. The Games of La Francophonie were awarded to the DRC on July 2, 2019 during the 108th session of the Permanent Council of La Francophonie. Victim of several postponements due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this event should keep all its promises at the end of July 2023.
